How to Leash Train a Dog With Clicker Training

Leash trainingTaking a dog for a walk can be challenging and exhausting if they don’t know how to walk on a leash. How to train a dog to walk on a leash is something every dog owner has to go through, and in order to accomplish this type of training you may need to get a little creative. Leash training a dog can begin as a game of sorts and it can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your dog.

Clicker Training Techniques

There are a few steps you can take to train your dog before you begin taking them out for walks. Put a leash on your dog at home and stand still. Once your dog has released the tension on their leash, use a clicker and show them that you have a treat in your hand. Place the treat on the ground. Once your pup has eaten the treat, walk backwards until the leash becomes taut and stand still. When your pup moves towards you to release the tension in the leash, press the clicker again. Repeat this many times. By using this technique you’re teaching your dog that a loose leash will earn them treats.

When you decide to venture outdoors with your dog, start off by turning away from them and begin walking. Your dog will follow. As your pup catches up to you press the clicker and give them a treat. Once they’ve eaten the treat, begin to walk again. Show your dog that you have a treat in your hand and walk a few paces away. Once your dog catches up again, place a treat on the ground a little behind you. This works to help keep your dog close to you and prevents them from pulling or dragging you.

Your job will be to increase the amount of distance you make before pressing the clicker and rewarding your pup. As your pup begins to make progress you’ll be able to walk much longer without being pulled because they believe that you’ll reward them for staying near you.

What if these Training Methods don’t Work?

Leash Train a DogThis type of training will take some time and the sooner you begin training your dog the better. If you have decided to adopt an older dog and they have learned bad leash walking habits, it’s still possible to teach them the correct way to walk on a leash, but it will take time. The clicker method may not work for your dog, so don’t be afraid to do a little experimenting, using different techniques until you find one that your dog responds to.
